Welcome!

I know March is mostly known for college basketball’s “March Madness” and St. Patrick’s Day, but of course I have to go with the wellness angle and acknowledge March 10-16 being Sleep Awareness Week supported by the National Sleep Foundation (thensf.org). Maybe it’s the Spring Forward change and losing an hour of sleep or maybe I’m noticing a bit more tossing and turning these days, but I’ve currently been focused on improving my sleep quality and trying to hit that 7 hour mark, which seems to be the minimum nightly recommendation. I just signed up for Mindful’s free 7-day sleep challenge, so will be curious to find out what insights they offer and I also have a dedicated section for sleep resources and research under the Wellness Resources tab to support anyone interested in this topic as well.

Wellness Research in the News

Chalkboard, books and the title Key to Wellness, Keep Education Yourself.

March 21, 2024 - An avocado a day may improve overall diet quality, researchers report - Penn State’s Department of Nutritional Sciences
The 26-week study consisted of 1,008 participants split into two groups, one group continued their usual diet limiting their avocado intake, while the other group incorporated one avocado per day into their diet. Researchers found the study participants who ate a daily avocado used avocados as a substitute for some foods higher in refined grains and sodium. That same group also saw an increase in vegetable consumption as well as they used avocados to replace some unhealthier options.

March 18, 2024 - 8-hour time-restricted eating linked to a 91% higher risk of cardiovascular death - American Heart Association Epidemiology and Prevention|Lifestyle and Cardiometabolic Health Scientific
A study of over 20,000 adults found that those who followed an 8-hour time-restricted eating schedule, a type of intermittent fasting, had a 91% higher risk of death from cardiovascular disease.

March 18 - Breathe, don’t vent: Turning down the heat is key to managing anger - Ohio State University
"Venting about a source of anger might feel good in the moment, but it’s not effective at reducing the rage, new research suggests. Instead, techniques often used to address stress – deep breathing, mindfulness, meditation, yoga or even counting to 10 – have been shown to be more effective at decreasing anger and aggression."

March 12, 2024 - Eating yogurt may help reduce Type 2 diabetes risk
"The Food and Drug Administration announced last week that it will allow yogurt producers to say that regular consumption of their products may prevent Type 2 diabetes, but labels must also include the qualification that this is based on 'limited scientific evidence.'"

March 6, 2024 - Too little sleep raises risk of type 2 diabetes - Uppsala University, Sweden
Researchers “… used data from one of the largest population databases in the world, the UK Biobank, in which nearly half a million participants from the UK have been genetically mapped and responded to questions on health and lifestyle. They followed the participants for over ten years and found that a sleep duration of between three and five hours was linked to a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes. In contrast, healthy eating habits led to a lower risk of developing the disease, but even people who ate healthily but slept less than six hours a day were still at higher risk of type 2 diabetes.

Feb. 13, 2024 - The consumption of certain food additive emulsifiers may increase the risk of cancer - National Institute of Health and Medical Research, France
Researchers analyzed the health data of 92,000 adults participating in the French NutriNet-Santé cohort study and results suggest an association between the intake of certain emulsifiers (including carrageenans, modified starches, lecithins, phosphates, celluloses, gums and pectins) and an increased risk of cancer, particularly breast and prostate. “Emulsifiers are among the most commonly used additives in processed and packaged foods to improve appearance, taste and texture and lengthen shelf life.”
